We recently came together for our annual Illinois Regional Convention for 2017 – Promoting Leadership and Peace. Our wonderful physical host Alpha Epsilon Kappa of Lincoln Land Community College had the layout of the college well worked out for fairly easy commuting between sessions. Theta Epsilon of Southwestern Illinois College – Belleville were awesome greeters being the co-host of this fun-filled weekend. Malinda Mullet, chapter president of Theta Epsilon, is the fantastic designer of this year’s T-shirt with the help of the chapter officer team!
Dr. Leigh Steiner, was our first speaker. She honed in on communication and made a good point that language is not solely what we spout out of our mouths, but what our bodies also say as well. She has had lots of practice in this as she has worked in various counseling positions including a maximum security prison. One of Lincoln Land’s instructors, Chris McDonald, PhD., spoke as our second guest speaker who challenged us to come up with a definition of peace and shared with us how he feels the First World War changed the 20th Century’s view of the term war. He is a published author, as well as arranging trips onto the battlefields for in-depth writing, researching and teaching of the First World War. Molly Grisham had the audience doing more hands on by conducting our own list of what makes a great leader. What qualities do you value more than your neighbor? Afterward, can you classify them as skills vs. traits? Now take it farther by separating these same set of skills as task oriented or relational. Finally, add in the conversation of working as a team. Well, as the owner of Influence, Molly Grisham has her own Leadership reboot program that will be offered again in January 2018.
Educational forums ranged from 5 star, Competitive Edge, Leadership, Fundraising, Goal setting, as well as what happens to Phi Theta Kappa after graduation. Physical host Lincoln Land helped create a Time Capsule that we created and are invited to retrieve it in 2042 as the 75th Anniversary Celebration. Awards is always fun cheering on your fellow Kappans and helping them celebrate in their hard work and what they have accomplished! From game night to educational forums to social networking that when Sunday comes most are happy and sad to saying farewell. A new regional officer team has been sworn in as well as new IRAA members to jump start the next year! Don’t forget to save the date for Illinois Regional Honors Institute and Leadership Conference October 6-8, 2017 at Lewis & Clark Community College in Godfrey, IL! We look forward to seeing you there! And never forget as a Phi Theta Kappan to go forth “Promoting Leadership and Peace”!
